Alternatives
There are some alternatives to urban consolidation to accommodate a larger population, however there are many issues involved with these solutions:
- A possible scenario is to expand Sydney. However this is unlikely due to the possibility of overlapping into another existing city and the high cost associated with the expansion.
- Another is to expand another city in Australia to become another major Australian city. This can lessen the load of Sydney's population increase and avoid the results of excess urban consolidation. However it is quite costly to develop another city, and the city may not have the qualities of Sydney that attracts the attention of residents.
- A new city can be built in Australia to lessen Sydney's load and to join Australia's major cities. However Australian's prefer to live close to the coast, as shown by the proximity of major cities in Australia to the coast and around 85% of Australians living within 50 kilometers of the coastline of Australia. Not many people like to live in inland Australia since it is basically a desert, meaning worse living conditions and accessibility to goods and services. Also this project would be very costly to execute and will take longer than a decade to plan, start and complete.
